A Photographic conversation with the works of Antony Gormley
By Andy Phillipson
Requiem Noun: A Mass for the Dead
Conceived in the aftermath of Andy’s mother’s death in 2022, Requiem is a suite of photographs that draws on figures from Antony Gormley’s 2024 Critical Mass exhibition at the Musee Rodin as source material.
The work explores the transformative process of death and grief, perception and memory, as well as notions of ancestry and lineage.
The Requiem images are layered, disrupted, and often remain unresolved, reflecting the non-linear nature of mourning – exploring grief as both a personal and collective experience.
The pictures are created through a combination of camera techniques and post-processing, incorporating Andy’s own photographs of earthquake-ravaged Italian towns. Their fractured architecture and emptied spaces mirror the pyschological terrain of loss.
