Art

Our fine art collection was once the personal collection of the museum’s founder, the artist Thomas Stuart Smith. Smith generously bequeathed his own artwork, his personal collection, and the money to create what is now The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.

Today our collection is diverse and includes artwork from across Europe, as well as local scenes and artwork by Stirling artists.

Objects

The Smith is home to over 60,000 artworks and objects spanning over 10,000 years of Stirling’s history.

The story of Stirling is central to the development of Scotland and is embodied in the rich collections which are cared for by the museum today. This is a story of social justice and freedom, of innovation and ideas, of outreach and exploration.

We’re working hard to digitise our collections so that you can explore them online. New entries are consistently being added, featuring object descriptions and images. Below you can browse some of the amazing objects that have been digitised so far.
